New green law sends sofas to the incinerator rather than landfill

16 January, 2023

A change in the law will now see upholstered furniture such as sofas and chairs be recycled in a new way.

The legislation was brought in by the Environment Agency and DEFRA, it will aim to help protect the environment by incinerating the foam found in these items. So far there can be pollution and damage to aquatic environments when foam in upholstered furniture that contains a fire-retardant product, known as persistent organic pollutants (POP’s), is taken to landfill.

The product, which is typically found in sofas, armchairs, upholstered dining chairs, office chairs, bean bags and upholstered/padded furniture, must now be incinerated instead.
