Steelcase has responded to this issue by creating the Steelcase Social Innovation Lab to identify and accelerate the development of solutions addressing issues of equity and wellbeing in the education environment.

What will office spaces look like moving forward?

That’s the question on the mind of many landlords, tenants, architects and designers.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, remote work has proliferated. But now, as the number of vaccinated people rises and Covid cases decrease, many businesses are pondering the future of their office environments.

While some companies may allow employees to work from home full time, less than 20% nationwide expect to reduce their average square footage, according to a survey from office furniture-maker Steelcase Inc.

Michigan lifts workplace rules; Steelcase employees can return to work

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer visited office and contract furniture giant Steelcase to say that employees may return to work. Whitmer also said that vaccinated workers are no longer required to wear masks on the job.

Rules forcing employees to work from home if possible were lifted across the state. Michigan is home to many big furniture makers, including Steelcase, Haworth, and Herman Miller.

Steelcase (SCS), one of the largest furniture and workspace appliances manufacturers in the United States, has seen some difficult times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since millions of office workers have been working from home since early 2020, they haven’t been spending as much in office upgrades and overall workspace improvements as they typically do during the work cycle. As a result, Steelcase has seen a dramatic drop in revenues and earnings in 2020 and they expect 2021 to be just marginally better.

Sara Armbruster to Become President and Chief Executive Officer, Effective October 4, 2021

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan; April 19, 2021 – Steelcase Inc. (NYSE: SCS) President and CEO Jim Keane, announces he will be retiring on January 7, 2022, after 25 years with the company, including more than seven years as CEO. Keane will remain President and CEO until October 4, 2021, at which time he will become vice chair and will serve in that role until his retirement from the company.

Net zero Steelcase announces goal to be carbon negative by 2030

After achieving carbon neutrality across its operations, Steelcase is now targeting new goals to be carbon negative by 2030.

Motivated by the urgency of climate change, Steelcase expanded upon its existing renewable energy commitments with the purchase of carbon offsets. In 2020, Steelcase achieved a reduction of more than 30 per cent in greenhouse gas emissions over the previous ten years. While the carbon neutral (net zero) target has been achieved by removing as much carbon as it emits, the company is now taking its commitment further with a goal to become carbon negative by 2030, which it plans to accomplish by reducing emissions across its operations with targets in line with climate science.
