Furniture sales still down at La-Z-Boy, but recovery is likely

Residential furniture giant La-Z-Boy reported third-quarter sales of $470.1 million, a 1.2 percent decline over the same period last year. The company’s net income for the quarter fell to $29.2 million from $34.5 million.

The company’s wholesale segment decreased to $350.7 million from $364.8 million. Its retail segment sales were $165.9 million from $167.4 million.

According to AMA Research, COVID-19 has had a serious impact on the home office furniture market in 2020. Despite a move to homeworking, demand for home office furniture is expected to have declined by 8% in 2020; however this can be contrasted with the 17% fall in the total office furniture market.

HOLLAND — While furniture maker Haworth Inc. absorbed an expected hit to sales in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company cited its diversification as a way of easing the blow.

The Holland-based privately held and family-owned company recently released figures for global sales in 2020. Haworthfinished the pandemic-consumed year with $1.81 billion in sales, which was a sharp 19 percent decrease from 2019 totals.

HOLLAND, MI — Furniture manufacturer Haworth reported global sales of $1.81 billion in 2020, a 19% drop from the previous year.

Despite the loss, the Holland-based company says its performance was “better than expected.” It credited efforts to diversify its product offerings.

“Haworth responded to the events of 2020 by leveraging our differentiation and global reach,” President and CEO Franco Bianchi said in a statement.

 

Soft North American contract furniture market drags Herman Miller sales lower

ZEELAND — Office furniture maker Herman Miller Inc. continues to feel the sting as office workers stay home because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In reporting its 2021 fiscal year results for its third quarter that ended Feb. 27, the company said it generated $590.5 million in sales for the three-month period, down 11.3 percent from the same time last year.
