Furniture retailer Bob Berman dies at 65

ORCHARD LAKE, Mich. — Robert “Bob” Berman, principal of Furniture Factory Liquidators in Livonia, Mich., died March 26. He was 65.

Berman was the son of Jimmy and Bernice Berman. He graduated from West Bloomfield High School in 1973 and from Western Michigan University in 1976.

Former workers sue Flexsteel, claim denied severance pay

A group of former Flexsteel Industries employees is suing the company, alleging it used the pandemic to collect millions in federal aid while newly installed executives enriched themselves and denied severance pay to hundreds of laid-off, long-term workers.

The six plaintiffs, including three that worked in Dubuque, seek class-action status for their lawsuit, filed recently in federal court. They claim the Dubuque-headquartered company has violated the Iowa Wage Payment Collection Act, as well as the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act of 1988 and Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974.

Furniture sales still down at La-Z-Boy, but recovery is likely

Residential furniture giant La-Z-Boy reported third-quarter sales of $470.1 million, a 1.2 percent decline over the same period last year. The company’s net income for the quarter fell to $29.2 million from $34.5 million.

The company’s wholesale segment decreased to $350.7 million from $364.8 million. Its retail segment sales were $165.9 million from $167.4 million.

Haworth announces year-end results, new strategic partnership

Rise of the home office usher boom time for UK furniture sales

Pent up demand and a more permanent shift in working habits following COVID-19 is due to drive the home office market in 2021, despite a decline in demand last year.

According to AMA Research, COVID-19 has had a serious impact on the home office furniture market in 2020. Despite a move to homeworking, demand for home office furniture is expected to have declined by 8% in 2020; however this can be contrasted with the 17% fall in the total office furniture market.
