January storms impact La-Z-Boy’s Q3 sales, but company sees signs of progress

MONROE, Mich. — While the company reported a 13% decrease in consolidated delivered sales for its third quarter ended Jan. 27, La-Z-Boy Inc. said sales were up 5% when compared with the company’s most recent pre-pandemic third quarter.

CHICAGO – Just a few weeks after it was acquired, used-office-furniture marketplace FurnitureFinders has been accepted as a member of 1% for the Planet, a global environmental network.

FurnitureFinders was acquired late January by Wurkwel Ventures, a private investment firm focused on the corporate office space. In the announcement, Wurkwel detailed its plans to make the company more environmentally friendly, with plans to introduce “planet first” best practices.

The summer before his junior year of high school, John Costello was looking through the “free” section of Craigslist when he stumbled upon a used set of office cubicles. For Costello, now a junior at the University of St. Thomas, those free cubicles would become first sale for his company, West Metro Solutions, which celebrated $1 million in sales in September.

West Metro Solutions is an environmentally conscious office furniture company that refurbishes and resells used office furniture across the U.S., keeping it out of the landfill, said Costello, who is studying entrepreneurship and finance at St. Thomas.

Office furniture manufacturer shuts down ‘unrecoverable’ brand

ITASCA, Ill. – A producer of workplace furnishings will shut down one of its segments and manufacturing plants this year.

The Illinois-based Fellowes Brands announced changes last week to its contract furniture division, formerly known as Trendway, which it acquired in 2019. Among the changes will be the closure of the Trendway production facility in Michigan later this year and the discontinuation of a portion of its furniture product offering, including systems, case goods, filing, storage and tables. Fellowes will continue to accept orders of these discontinued products until June and ship orders through July 2024.

Hundreds face layoffs from Flexsteel plant closure

DUBLIN, Ga. — On Feb. 9, 154 Flexsteel employees at the Dublin, Georgia, furniture factory were laid off. Likely permanently. The fate of another estimated 180 workers might be sealed at the end of the company’s fiscal fourth quarter later this year.

Flexsteel, the Dubuque, Iowa-based company has filed a WARN notice with the Georgia Department of Labor notice advising that 154 employees will be out of a job as of the Feb. 9 date.

Flexsteel restructures leadership, promotes two executives

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Flexsteel has announced a restructuring of its leadership team, including naming a new president and chief financial officer. Jerry Dittmer, previously president and CEO, remains CEO.

Filling Dittmer’s role of president is Derek Schmidt, who previously worked as the company’s chief operating officer for a little less than two years. Before that, he was chief financial officer for another two years. Prior to Flexsteel, he was senior vice president of Crescent Electric Supply Co. for two years and held executive management roles at office furniture supplier The Hon Co.
